Have you ever dreamt of embarking on an epic bike packing journey that takes you from the picturesque city of Rotterdam to the captivating shores of the Black Sea? If so, get ready to join us on an unforgettable adventure filled with cycling, camping, and exploration. In this blog post, we’ll take you through our exciting bike packing trip that started with a few unexpected twists but turned out to be an incredible experience.
Packing and Organizing for the Adventure
Before setting off on any bike packing trip, careful planning and organization are essential. We made sure to pack all the necessary gear and provisions to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Here’s a breakdown of how we prepared:
1. Bikes and Camping Equipment
Selecting the right bikes for the trip is crucial. We opted for sturdy and reliable touring bikes that could handle various terrains. Along with our bikes, we carried lightweight yet durable camping equipment, including tents, sleeping bags, and cooking utensils. Since we anticipated camping in various locations, our gear needed to be compact and easy to carry.
2. Snacks and Nutrition
Long-distance cycling demands a constant supply of energy. We packed a variety of nutritious snacks such as energy bars, nuts, dried fruits, and trail mix. Staying hydrated was equally important, so we carried plenty of water and a portable water filter to refill along the way.
3. Tools and Repair Kit
Mechanical mishaps can occur during a bike packing trip, so we made sure to bring a basic toolkit with tire levers, a pump, spare inner tubes, and chain lubricant. Being self-sufficient with bike repairs helped us overcome unexpected breakdowns.
4. Clothing
Packing the right clothing is essential for comfort and protection against the elements. We packed lightweight and quick-drying clothes suitable for both warm and cool weather. A waterproof and windproof jacket proved invaluable during unexpected rain showers.
5. Battery Banks
Since we relied on our smartphones for navigation and communication, portable battery banks were a must to keep our devices charged throughout the trip.
The Journey Begins: Hull and the Unexpected Delay
Our journey started with a train journey from Leeds to Hull, where we planned to catch a ferry to continue our route to Rotterdam. However, we faced an unexpected delay when we missed the ferry due to a misunderstanding about the check-in time. Despite the initial setback, we remained positive and decided to make the most of our time in Hull.
Discovering the Beauty of Hull
After finding a suitable camping spot in a nature reserve, we turned the delay into an opportunity to explore Hull. The transport museum fascinated us with its collection of historical vehicles, offering a glimpse into the city’s past. Later, we visited the thought-provoking Ferns Art Gallery, where local artists showcased their talent through captivating exhibits.
The Ferry Experience
The next day, determined not to miss the ferry again, we arrived at the port well before the departure time. Cycling onto the P&O ferry was an experience in itself. Once on board, we secured our bikes and checked into a comfortable en-suite room.
The ferry offered a plethora of entertainment options, from live music in the Sky Lounge to various restaurants serving delicious cuisine. The onboard arcade added a nostalgic touch, and the spectacular views through the windows were a sight to behold. After a delightful evening of entertainment, we retired to our rooms for some much-needed rest before the cycling leg of our adventure began.
